Sebastian Clark - Songs From A Van

By Russell Barker

A university dropout travelling around in a Westfalia camper van and recording an album along the way? In the wrong hands this could be a recipe for disaster, in Sebastian Clark's it's a stroke of genius.

The album starts with the door sliding open as he lets you into his world. Musically lead track 'Home' is the hippyish folk you may well have been expecting, some lovely finger picked guitar and a Donovan vibe to it. The song comes to a close with Sebastian accentuating the word home in a soothing breathy style.

'What If I Told You?' is disorientating psychedelic folk, the vocals bouncing between the left and right speakers. Bongos and shakers keep the rhythm and try to hold things together. 'All Of My Love' is a wonky rhythm, a touch of Mungo Jerry to it. 'Slippin Through The Cracks' is a good companion piece to 'All Of My Love', upping the disjointed, insane ante even further. 'Okay, Goodnight' is a Simon & Garfunkel style tale of bogeymen and features a fine bit of whistling. Sebastian is crooning to us on 'One Year Later' before he goes all Tyrannosaurus Rex on us with the light and bubbly 'Glassy Eyes', the bongo action and warbled vocals eerily reminiscent of Marc Bolan's early days.

From there on it's a riotous trip to the album's end. 'One Step Ahead' is a song that is a joyous chorus from beginning to end. Is it possible to have an a capella lullaby with musical backing? A contradiction in terms it may be, but that's exactly what 'Slow Down' sounds like. As it seems to be channelling the spirit of the Bonzo Dog Band it's probably little wonder it's a wonderful paradox. 'Hummingbird' reminds you of Devendra Banhart, then Sebastian runs through one more tune, 'Baby', and he's off, the door sliding shut behind him.
