Captain Wilberforce - Everyone Loves A Villain (Blue Tuxedo Records)

By Russell Barker

Simon Bristoll's second album under the Captain Wilberforce moniker finds him on good form. 'Everyone Loves A Villain' has all the pop bounce of Squeeze and The Beatles. There's a touch of the Lightning Seeds in there, mainly due to the sheer effervescent quality of the songs. After hitting you with a great opening brace there's no let up of quality with 'Confetti, Champagne and Roses' which lies somewhere between the aforementioned Lightning Seeds and The Lemonheads power pop. 'The Girl Who Broke Her Own Heart' is gorgeous and strung out, 'Get A Grip, My Dear' sees Simon doing Broudie again, but with West Coast pop twist and 'Don't Get Me Started' crashes in like a teenage symphony from Velvet Crush.

After a few more songs of a similar vein and similar quality, the album closes with a delightful acoustic tune called 'The Twilight Kids' that reminds me of Roddy Frame at his very best. I urge you to check out this album, it's one for all you pop kids out there.
